Our Heritage In 1874 Dr. O. R. Fassett, a pioneer doctor and preacher, and his wife, Laurette Armstrong Fassett accepted the call to begin a work in the Independence area. The group met at the Armstrong school. On January 16, 1881 a new chapel was dedicated across the road from their home near Lake Sarah. Mrs. Fassett preached the dedication sermon to a large crowd. She died in 1884 and is buried in Rockford, Minnesota. The church as we now know it was organized December 8, 1891 as the Armstrong Advent Christian Church, and incorporated on April 1, 1892. The old part of the church we meet in today was built (primarily) by Rev. J. N. Potter and was dedicated on April 17, 1892. The original sanctuary ended at the present front pews (the platform area was added later), and had two aisles with pews attached to the side walls and a center section of pews. In 1935 the congregation called Marvin Thompson as pastor, and because of the church’s location in the Armstrong area of Independence township, it became known as Armstrong Community Church. A group of Seventh Day Adventists used the church as a meeting place on Saturdays from 1926 to 1946, when they built a church in Maple Plain. Growth continued, and in 1949 the Hedin family donated some property, then located just north of Maple Plain in Independence. The congregation voted to build a new church, which was dedicated in the spring of 1950 and named Maple Plain Community Church. This property is now a part of the city of Maple Plain. A group of worshippers stayed at the Armstrong Church, and in 1961, purchased the property from the Advent Christian Society. Rev. Richard Beals was pastor during this time. In 1962 a building program was launched to enlarge the sanctuary and remodel the entire facility. An additional two acres of land was purchased from Mrs. Inga Hillstrom in 1966 and the lower auditorium extension was built. On October 29, 1980, the name of the church was changed to Faith Community Church. In 1986 the pews were refinished and new padded seats were put on them. Over the years, the church family has been involved in area crusades, Minnetonka Youth Fellowship, singspiration, missions endeavors, bus ministry and other outreaches. We thank all the people of the past and present who love Jesus, and have served in this place. May God allow us to continue being a lighthouse in the community until Jesus comes, and we meet face to face.
